One more question regarding “Puppy” came into my mind. What does the “puppy” mean in the story?

What I am considering as a possible answer is that it means any burden or responsibility in our lives. Marie is the character who considers taking the puppy home and visits Callie to take a look at it. But when she encounters it, she thinks “[I]t was a nice pup, but Marie was not going to contribute to a situation like this in even the smallest way,” just like she decides to take no action for Bo. She considers them as something more than she can take in and decides not to put her hand on it. On the other hand, Callie wants the puppy to be taken. When Marie says no, she takes it to the cornfield and leaves it there, physically distancing it from herself. By doing so, she thinks she is doing a favor to her husband. But removing the puppy from her sight does not fundamentally solve the problem. She tries to justify herself but still, it remains a heavy load on her mind, making her feel guilty for a long time.
