The Semplica Girls Diaries, by George Saunders

I want to share some notes I made while reading the story. They are not in complete sentence structure, but they should still be comprehensible.

(overall theme)

1) Why only girls? In white gowns - virginity?

> provides a view into Saunder's critical point of view towards society? In the story, girls sacrifice, give up education, leave for foreign countries for money, their family sorry but can't help. (=narrator's imagination: hints at the general way of thinking)

> virginity : beauty = cleanness = virginity -> misogynistic?

 

2) Why a diary? Why dad as the narrator? What's special about the writing style?

> diary? liveliness, imagination / thinking / shifts of thought

> why dad? economic burden, builds a criticizable character. Of course, he loves his daughters but the values he has? acceptable? materialistic OR practical?

> writing style? MANY abbreviated forms, shortened sentences, shows the flow of thoughts as raw as they are in our minds

 

3) Parenting Style - Lilly, Eva

Lilly - is buying stuffs for Lilly good for her? / Eva - more trying to persuade than listen, "This is the world, you know not"

> with Lilly, reflects on his own childhood

> especially toxic to Eva, I think. Lilly has already learned some realistic values, but Eva not yet. Not saying that being naive is likeable, but in general, when handling an opinion collision, should show respect to your child's opinion!

 

4) Can we not go on without being infiltrated with materialistic values, what is most responsible for it?

> media most responsible? SNS also! displaying lives, celebrities, envy, etc. etc.

 

(p.9)

“However, not that simple. Some recent problems with Visa. Full. Past full. Found out at YourItalianKitchen, when Visa declined. Left Pam and kids there, walked rapidly out with big fake smile, drove to ATM. [...]”

> Why hide important issues? Even from his wife? Burdened, thinks of family economic problems as his own issue! Embarrassed to admit, maybe. An archetype of a dad of the time? reserved, does not share, burdened

> Often thinks of his dad in reminiscence, does he resemble his dad? Does he want to be?

 

(p.19)

“Note to self: Try to extend positive feelings associated with Scratch-Off win into all areas of life. Be bigger presence at work.”

> shows a positive attitude! But only when the situation gets better and he is feeling good?

 

(p.20)

“Eva: So, just because everyone is doing it, that makes it right.”

> Great insight! Eva the voice of reason in the story! But the narrator's comment, "This cute." Is that all? Does not take it seriously

 

(p.21)

“Then decided to level w/ Eva.

Explained: [...]

Eva wild about Lilly, would walk in front of train for Lilly.”

> Is this a correct way of communication/persuading?

(p.24)

“Says this actually good news: with microline still in, will be easier to locate SGs, as microline limits how fast they can walk, since, fleeing in group, they are forced to take baby steps, so one does not get too far behind/ahead of others, hence causing yank on microline, yank that could damage brain of one yanked.”

> reminds me of historical references... slaves, women prevent from running away, Chinese shoes for women (전족), basically the same, only involves cutting-edge tech.

 

(p.28)

“This makes person (Father) doubt value of whole enterprise, i.e., makes Father (me) wonder if humans would not be better off living alone, individually, in woods, minding own beeswax, not loving anyone.”

> family=burden? Why separate a father from the rest?
