Puppy, by George Saunders

Having finished reading Puppy, the first thing that came into my mind was that Saunders is an author with the fabulous skill of handling so many different social issues in a single story, only without it seeming to be so. Every part of the story is an essential element in the plot, and at the same time touches on various topics, such as wealth and social standing, parenting styles and children's behaviors, judgment by appearances, and so on.

Two mothers appear in the story: Marie and Callie. They are the possible least alike people, except for they have a son with behavioral problems. Puppy is a story where they interact with each other in an incident. The contrasting settings for the characters give rise to questions regarding the limitations financial status sets on our lives and the ideal way of raising a child.

One thing I liked about the story was how it is in a circulating form, both starting and ending with an image of a cornfield. In the beginning, Marie drives past a cornfield, sees beauty in it, and tries to let her kids recognize it. And at the end of the story, Callie leaves the puppy in the corn field, trying to justify her deed. The cornfield seems to be a symbolization of adversities in life in both contexts. Marie, who grew up in a depressing family environment, is looking at the corn field from the outside, as she often thinks of her mom in retrospect. She notices aesthetic quality in it, but in a somewhat unusual way in that it reminds her of “a haunted house.” It suggests that she might be convincing herself into thinking her traumatic childhood was not perfectly awful, but it has certain values as it shaped her into the “ideal mom” she is trying to be. It also hints at the unconditionally positive gesture she has toward the world. On the other hand, Callie runs through the corn, away from the dog. She is a character currently going through hardship. She thinks what she is doing is the best she can do, for herself and her family.
